Life in cold environments. September 20, 2012. Until relatively recently, glacial environments were thought to be largely devoid of life. In fact, microorganisms are capable or surviving and, in some cases thriving on, in, and under glaciers. These microbial communities are of great interest to astrobiol. Ogy because glacial systems on Earth represent good analogues for other icy environments in our solar system, such as the Martian polar ice caps. The Jovian moon Europa. And the Saturnian moon Enceladus.
