amykpearce: St Catherine's College, Oxford
http://amykpearce.blogspot.com/2011/02/st-catherines-college-oxford.html
St Catherine's College, Oxford. Continuity in Architecture ventured down to Oxford last week to visit St Catherine's College. We were shown around Arne Jacobsen's original 1960's buildings and Steven Hodder's 1994 and 2005 additions. Do people make a mess of architecture, or can architecture leave no room for people. Or perhaps these ordered buildings are simply suited to the life of an Oxford College. 7 February 2011 at 18:51. I love the building, though with and without people.

Architecture for Art - Architecture for People. I am currently reading Brain Brace Taylor's book on Corbusier's Cite de Refuge. This project has raised several questions for me, some about designing for the homeless but most about architecture and the role of an architect. Conceived as a place of refuge for the homeless by the Salvation Army, Corbusier designed the building in accordance with his architectural theory of a machine for living. My project this year is focused on the Piazza in front of Westm...

Manchester: A Family City? The prospect of writing ten thousand words for someone who ashamedly can barely structure an essay was somewhat daunting. However, after four years of university education it was time to read and write like never before. So I asked; Could Manchester's sustainable growth benefit from the development of inner city living for families? Could Manchester facilitate family living in its centre? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Westminster Piazza Centre for the Homeless. At the time of the Cathedral’s construction two distinctive grids existed at odds with each other. The Cathedral clearly belonging to the grain of the residential buildings that surrounded it. Today, whilst the two grids still exist they now collide at the point of the Piazza which was constructed in the 1970s. This is accentuated further by the 2004 addition of the off axis,. Connection of Cardinal Place. The building masses carefully sculpt and shape the publ...

amykpearce: Rear Window Series 1

Rear Window Series 1. Although I haven't broken my leg like Hitchcock's 1954 character, living in a flat I do often see strange things happening in other peoples flats, on the street or in the car park. On a less nosey neighbour note, I also have a view out across Manchester's roof tops. I find myself often photographing the changing light and skies. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Don't stand in the way of progress. People often ask why I wanted to study architecture and I'm never really sure what to say. For some reason this question compels me to try and justify my chosen career path with a wonderful, momentous tale of enlightenment. Http:/ www.hertsmemories.org.uk/page id 65.aspx. Ok, so my memories don't quite stretch back as far as this photograph but I can certainly recall seeing the tower in all these later states. And what was most confusing for this young girl was the sla...
