Faith, Folk and Charity. August 11, 2015. Còig: ‘Mary and the Soldier/The Boys of Portaferry’. I thought I’d share a few songs from people I enjoyed at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival this past weekend. One band I really liked was Còig. From Cape Breton. Her Mantle So Green: Irish Street Songs and Fiddle Tunes. Another recording made by Alan Lomax in 1953 was included in 1998 on her Rounder anthology. I Sang Through the Fairs.

Bill Whelan's production and arranging credits include, among others, U2. He has worked extensively in theatre. His adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore had successful runs at London's Old Vic. Melbourne and Sydney and received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination. In 1989, he was appointed composer to the W.B. Yeats International Theatre Festival at Dublin's Abbey Theatre, he wrote original music for 15 Yeat's plays. He also produced records for many folk artists including, Andy Irvine.

A friend of mine recommended this volume of short stories, by an author whose name was unknown to me, and although I'm perhaps not the easiest person to suggest books to she hit the money on this one. Maybe she just knew that "lake" and "monster" are a combination I can't resist. North American Lake Monsters. Is available from Small Beer Press. Was the name given to a big hammer used to smash the machinery, rather ironically as it was named after Enoch and James Taylor of Marsden near Huddersfield who were the ingenious blacksmiths who invented the cropping machine. In 1972 on his Folk-Heritage album. The Fine Old Yorkshire Gentleman. In 1972 on his Topic album. Louis and Sally Killen sang. Unaccompanied in 1975 on their LP. He also sang in in 1980 on his Collector album. The Masters of Bankdam.
