Juicy Studio: WAI-ARIA Live Regions Updated
http://juicystudio.com/article/wai-aria_live-regions_updated.php
WAI-ARIA Live Regions Updated. WAI-ARIA Live Regions Updated. Monday, 14th January 2013. I wrote about the. S Web Accessibility Initiative - Accessible Rich Internet Applications. S live region properties 6 years ago, but the WAI-ARIA specification has changed significantly in that time, and the details in that article are now outdated. The examples in the original article used XHTML namespaces, which are irrelevant now that WAI-ARIA is supported in HTML5. Live regions inform assistive technology users o...
Why are you fighting me? | Andy Hume
http://blog.andyhume.net/why-are-you-fighting-me
Thoughts and commentary on web development. Why are you fighting me? I wrote this about a month ago. And like many writing exercises for me its value turned out to be cathartic more than anything else and I never pushed publish. Then I read something John Allsopp wrote yesterday and got excited. This is a response to a blog post by Joe Hewitt, titled Web Technologies Need an Owner. Many people seem to assume that the Web will one day become the one and only client computing platform on Earth…". The Web h...
HTML5 in six steps | Andy Hume
http://blog.andyhume.net/html5-in-six-steps
Thoughts and commentary on web development. HTML5 in six steps. The six steps below will take you only minutes to implement and are the first steps in adopting HTML5. Each one provides some small benefit to either you as a developer or your users. 1) Update the DOCTYPE. For many years choosing a Document Type Definition and associated DOCTYPE required a certain amount of consideration. Would you choose HTML or XHTML? If you chose XHTML would it be Transitional or Strict? Strict 1.0, or Strict 1.1? For ye...

The Best is Yet to Come. The hypertext of Thomas Prior. UX Brighton goes for a spin. June 16, 2013. November 7, 2013. On Tuesday, Brighton’s regular(ish) UX Brighton. Meetup took on an automotive theme for the evening. He agreed to let me curate this month’s meetup. Dashboard design and the cockpit experience. Principal Human F...
Microsoft: My take | Andy Hume
http://blog.andyhume.net/microsoft-my-take
Thoughts and commentary on web development. A recent NYT article by former Microsoft VP Dick Brass. Has been doing the rounds. It's pretty middle of the road in terms of its judgement of Microsoft: over-run by middle management, caked in bureaucracy, both of which stifle innovation and creativity. The primary problem at Microsoft regarding good design and innovation is the diffusion of creative authority. Microsoft has always been a place that gives way too many people a say in matters of design, vision ...
Google Chrome Frame | Andy Hume
http://blog.andyhume.net/google-chrome-frame
Thoughts and commentary on web development. Yesterday I went over to The Werks. To listen to Remy. Enlighten some of the Flash Brighton. Gang on what to expect from HTML5 in the coming months and years. The subject of Chrome Frame. Came up, with the general consensus being that it wasn't really going to have an impact on the number of people browsing with IE, specifically IE 6. I take a different view on that question, and here's why. The key point is that Chrome Frame paved the way for Google to make th...
Forcing Gzipped content | Andy Hume
http://blog.andyhume.net/forcing-gzipped-content
Thoughts and commentary on web development. What would happen if every time you served a CSS or JavaScript file from your server you sent it Gzipped? Ignore whether the browser. It can handle compressed content, just send it compressed anyway. Steve Souders talks about forcing Gzip compression at Google here. And this method assumes there is a significant number of browsers that won't be able to compress it and will choke. It would be interesting to see Google's data on that. And changed it to:. I build ...
IPad | Andy Hume
http://blog.andyhume.net/ipad
Thoughts and commentary on web development. I stand by what I said from day one. Technically, it’s a big ass iPhone. But the iPhone is really a pretty magical device. And this is a big ass one. Here follows my prediction for myself and the iPad. While it’s impossible for me to buy one, I don’t really want one. I certainly don’t need one. There’s no obvious gap in my computing armour that it will fill. I’m not proud of myself. All code examples are licensed under the WTF Public License.
