Kitty’s Early Years | Finding Family

https://ancestrysearch.wordpress.com/2015/05/15/kittys-early-years

One woman's obsession with family history. Kitty’s Early Years. May 15, 2015. Looking at this with a pair of modern eyes, travelling whilst so close to when you are due to give birth does not necessarily seem out of the ordinary. If it were to happen today and you suddenly went into labour, there would be an ambulance (if needed) or (more likely) a car to drive you to the nearest hospital. So what about in 1894? Would a pregnant woman about to give birth travel across the countryside in a horse and cart?

The Mysterious Disappearance of Thomas Lisle Crampton | Finding Family

https://ancestrysearch.wordpress.com/2014/04/27/the-mysterious-disappearance-of-thomas-lisle-crampton

One woman's obsession with family history. The Mysterious Disappearance of Thomas Lisle Crampton. April 27, 2014. Fine day. Tilly had a little son. Rossie called. On 28 October 1891, Tilly left her parents’ house and started home where her husband, Tom and daughter, Daisy were probably waiting for her. Home, at this point in time, was most likely in Wokalup where Tom had built a house in early 1888 with the help of his brothers, nephews and father-in-law, Basil. They remained at Tilly’s parents’ house th...

The Secrets of Matilda Maria Hurst | Finding Family

One woman's obsession with family history. The Secrets of Matilda Maria Hurst. September 14, 2012. With nothing but a few records and documents to go on I often use my imagination and speculate as to what may have happened at a certain point in my ancestors’ lives. Until such (if any) evidence arises, these ‘what ifs’, forever remain theories in the back of my mind. This occurred with Matilda Maria Hurst. Fremantle Lunatic Asylum in the 1870s/1880s. Illness could’ve been what contributed to. If Matilda w...

The Royal “Snub” | Finding Family

https://ancestrysearch.wordpress.com/2015/04/03/the-royal-snub

One woman's obsession with family history. April 3, 2015. The people of Western Australia were in a constant state of excitement. The Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Alfred; the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) was sailing his ship ‘Galatea’ around the world and was planning to visit the Australian Colonies (the very first Royal to do so). It will be seen that the visit is but a probability, nevertheless we should be prepared [f]or a reality. Despite again stating that the visit was ‘probable’ t...

Fracking in Cemeteries « Gravewords

https://gravewords.wordpress.com/2012/07/03/fracking-in-cemeteries

Thoughts of a Gravetender. So it has come to this. In the never-ending quest for profit. Alternative forms of energy, natural gas companies are looking to drill in cemeteries. Yes, fracking is coming to a graveyard near you. Now, I don’t claim to be an expert on fracking but I did watch that Oscar-nominated documentary. About the process and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. As did this story about leasing mineral rights in cemeteries some highlights:. 8220;I think it’s a dumb idea because I...

Probably Arboreal: August 2012

http://probablyarboreal.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Musings from under the family tree. Surname Interests and Map. Each has his own tree of ancestors, but at the top of all sits Probably Arboreal.". Wednesday, 8 August 2012. In the genes (part 2). So, as promised, here’s part two of yesterday’s part one. Though if you read the original article, you will already know the story! I find this rather intriguing – could this skill really be ‘in the genes’? If you follow this line of reasoning, surely it can’t be too ridiculous to argue that my natural apt...

Probably Arboreal: A sinister discovery

http://probablyarboreal.blogspot.com/2013/03/a-sinister-discovery.html

Musings from under the family tree. Surname Interests and Map. Each has his own tree of ancestors, but at the top of all sits Probably Arboreal.". Monday, 18 March 2013. This weekend I finally found myself with a bit of free time, mainly because my poor boyfriend had taken himself off to bed ill and hence he couldn’t force me to DIY. So, I turned to my family history for the first time in a while to do some proper digging. I decided that I would focus my efforts on the family of Doris Ross. In 1908. ...

A collection of interesting social history and genealogy-related articles. For now I've alphabetised them by headline, but as this collection grows I may reorganise. Can Grimsby lay claim to a milestone in women's football? For the female mountaineering pioneers, it was an uphill struggle. In pictures: Russian Empire in colour photos. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
