Coming Home: Reverse Culture Shock. June 10, 2015. June 13, 2015. Washing clothes by hand. And sleeping sans net. Here are some other things I’ve noticed:. It’s really weird using tap water to drink and to brush my teeth. My body always hesitates for a moment and I have to remind myself that it’s safe, clean water. In Tanzania, the water was always bottled or boiled. It’s also weird having washing machines and dryers. A typical “squatty potty”. It doesn’t go out at random times. It stays on! I once talke...

Life in Luhunga: A Month in Rural Tanzania « AmySMU

Life in Luhunga: A Month in Rural Tanzania. April 30, 2015. July 30, 2015. Carrying bean stalks from the farm to our home. Wear shoes. Don’t get chiggers. Say “Kamwene.”. Just two days after spring break, me and my eleven CIEE. Friends loaded up the bus and drove to Mufindi, Tanzania for two weeks of homestay and two weeks of volunteering at Foxes NGO. Going into the homestay, I was excited but also nervous. Although I’d spent five weeks in Chipole. I knew that this experience would be very different.

Local Transportation: The Daladala. February 25, 2015. July 30, 2015. When I wrote “try new things” as a study abroad goal, I wasn’t expecting to find myself crammed into a minibus with rattling windows and a lightbulb dangling from the ceiling, my body squeezed between several other bodies, my hands gripping the metal bars on either side of the bus. This minibus is called a daladala and my first time riding it was a culture shock. This entry was posted in Tanzania. Milima na Mawe: Hiking in Tanzania.

Milima na Mawe: Hiking in Tanzania. March 3, 2015. July 30, 2015. In the two months I’ve been in Tanzania, I’ve gone on 5 hikes, summitted mountains and climbed more boulders than I can count. Hence, the title of this post: milima. Stones). The hiking is tiring, but it pays off–the views are breathtaking! This hike was pretty much bush-whacking, but we were lucky enough to have a guide: a Tanzanian boy who came out of nowhere and offered to guide us up the mountain, in his crocs! The Kindness of Strangers: Reflections of an Mgeni. May 27, 2015. July 30, 2015. Sunset in Dar es Salaam. View from the Tanzam highway, en route Matembo. 8221; As soon as I got off, I threw up into the grass. My friend Lucy followed me off the bus and we found a rock to sit on. For “stranger” and “guest.” In my case, there was no difference. On safari with 10 of the coolest people ever! 8221; (or, more typically, “how was Africa? 8221;) I don’t know what to say. That was Gala 2014, I told you about the interview that I was fortunate enough to be able to have with Lidia Bastianich. 2014 Gala chef. And now it’s here, ready to be seen by all. There isn’t too much to say (an English major. Not having too much to say… that must be a first! Because I think the video speaks for itself. Powered by Social Squad. My New Adventure: First Year vs. Senior Year. April 10, 2015. April 10, 2015. First Day of Incipio, August 2011. Sometimes I wonder how many times I’ve walked up and down the Grand Staircase, how many times I’ve walked through the front doors of Old Main. It’s something we at Saint Martin’s. Take for granted, it’s just a part of everyday life here. But now that my days of daily walks through campus are coming to an end, I’m getting a little nostalgic. And ready to take on my last...

Amy's Movie (and TV) Blog

Amy's Movie (and TV) Blog. Monday, July 28, 2008. Further Proof That Americans Don't Vote the Way They Should. I need to start this post by admitting that I did not vote last week for any contestant in SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance). If you want to make fun of me for watching this - go ahead. I love it, and will happily babble on to you about it if prompted. I know I shouldn't complain about the results of a vote I didn't participate in - but I'm going to anyway. OK, I fell better. I was very please...

This is my site to talk about my sons: Ethan and his brother Ian, aka: The Sniggett. Monday, September 16, 2013. I’ve been thinking about you a lot, lately. Your birthday is today. You’d have been 37. It’s been almost 6 years since you left us. You’re missing all of this. You’ve missed so much. The rest of us have missed you and missed watching your journey through life. We were cheated out of the laughter and struggles. YOU cheated us. I’m still angry. I’m still guilty. I’m still sad. I still miss you.
